There’s something undeniably magical about Greece, from the whitewashed cliffside villages of Santorini to the ancient ruins of Athens. It’s a place where mythology, history, and beauty converge, where every moment feels like a postcard coming to life.
We have always wanted to visit Greece, and when the opportunity finally arose to explore it, we knew we wanted to make every step of the journey count. That’s why we chose to fly with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines—and this time, we upgraded to World Business Class for an experience that set the tone for the entire trip.

At its heart, travel is about connection, and this trip reminded us why we do it in the first place. To learn, to share, and to feel something real. Whether we were reuniting with old friends in Santorini, laughing with locals in Milos, or learning about ancient ruins in Athens, Greece invited us to slow down and immerse ourselves fully.
We’ve flown all over the world, but our experience with KLM stood out in the best way.

Before diving into the unforgettable experiences we had in Greece, we want to share what made the flight so memorable:
- Effortless from the Start: Every step felt seamless from priority check-in to SkyPriority boarding and baggage.
- Flat-Bed Seats & Privacy: The cabin layout felt both spacious and cozy. We slept well, woke up refreshed, and had plenty of personal space to stretch out.
- A Culinary Surprise at 30,000 Feet: Multi-course meals crafted by top chefs paired with sommelier-selected wines were honestly one of the best parts of the flight.
- Thoughtful Comfort Touches: From the amenity kits featuring high-quality essentials to the iconic Dutch house keepsake, every detail felt carefully curated.
- Warm, Professional Crew: We were blown away by the kindness and professionalism of every staff member we encountered.
- Everything at Your Fingertips: Their mobile app and in-flight system made the experience even smoother, whether we were watching a movie or checking on our connection.

Feeling rested, relaxed, and taken care of from the start helped us slow down and be present for everything that came next. KLM helps you travel well—with purpose, comfort, and a deeper connection to every moment along the way.

1. Hike from Fira to Oia, Santorini
Wake up before sunrise to skip the crowds and make your way to Oia the slow way—on foot. This cliffside trail winds past blue-domed churches, wild lava rock, and unreal views of the Aegean Sea. It takes about 3–4 hours if you don’t rush it (and trust us, you won’t want to). Bring lots of water, wear running shoes, and don’t forget a hat.

Along the way, you’ll pass quiet little chapels, whitewashed houses, and expansive open vistas that feel like something out of a dream. Pack a snack, stop often, and take it all in.
2. Explore Sarakiniko, Milos
This otherworldly moonscape is made of smooth, white volcanic rock shaped by centuries of wind and waves. Climbing around it feels like being on another planet. You can explore caves, jump into the sea, or lie on the rocks and soak up the sun.
Go early in the morning to avoid the heat and the selfie sticks. The soft light makes everything glow, and you’ll have more space to explore at your own pace. There’s no shade, no snack bar—just nature doing its thing. It’s raw, stunning, and unforgettable.

3. Wander the Ancient Streets of Athens
Yes, it’s worth seeing the Acropolis—but give yourself time to go deeper. Athens is layered with history and creativity. After checking out the ruins, stroll through Psiri and Anafiotika, where bold street art and tucked-away cafés tell a different story of the city. Grab souvlaki from a late-night hole-in-the-wall and let the city’s contrasts wash over you.
There’s something special about Athens after dark—the ruins glow and locals linger at open-air tavernas. It’s gritty, vibrant, and full of stories. If you’re into hidden gems, check out the little open-air cinema in Thissio or catch a live show in a tiny basement bar. Athens is more than a layover; it’s a full-on experience if you give it time.

4. Find the Waterfall in Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Crete
Not far from the popular Preveli Beach is a tucked-away waterfall hidden deep inside the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. Getting to it is half the fun; there are some steep stairs involved, and you’ll definitely get wet. But if you’re up for the adventure, the reward is a secluded, mossy oasis with water so cold it takes your breath away.

Most people drive past the gorge without ever knowing what’s down there. That’s part of what makes it so special. The rock formations overhead feel almost cathedral-like, and if you go early or late, you might have the whole place to yourself. Bring water shoes, a dry bag, and a towel.
5. Hike to the Stunning Sykia Cave, Milos
If you’re up for a bit of adventure, hiking to Sykia Cave in Milos is one of the most rewarding experiences on the island and easily one of the best things to do in Greece!
This partially collapsed sea cave is only accessible by boat or on foot, and we opted to hike in. The trail is approximately 4.5 km round-trip, with about 260 meters of elevation gain, and winds through rugged coastal terrain offering incredible views along the way.

To reach the trailhead, we rented an ATV after reading that the road required a 4×4. In hindsight, we felt that a regular car could have handled it, although we have plenty of experience driving on rocky backroads. Use your best judgment based on your comfort level!
Bring plenty of water, food, and reef-safe sunscreen if you plan to swim, and be prepared for a short but moderately challenging hike. We arrived to find a few boat tours coming and going, but for the better part of an hour, we had the cave completely to ourselves—an unforgettable moment.

As always, pack out what you pack in and leave no trace. Places like Sykia are rare and fragile, and keeping them clean ensures everyone can enjoy their magic for years to come.
6. The Temple of Apollo, Naxos
If you’re looking to soak in some ancient history without the massive crowds, Naxos is the perfect island for it, and the Temple of Apollo is the ultimate place to start your day.
Also known as the Portara, this towering marble doorway is all that remains of a 2,500-year-old temple dedicated to Apollo. It was built in the 6th century BCE and still stands proudly at the edge of the sea, connected to Naxos Town by a narrow causeway. Though unfinished, it’s one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the Cyclades, and best of all, you can visit it freely, anytime.

What makes this spot even more magical is the time of day: sunrise. Most people head here for sunset, which can get crowded, but showing up early means you’ll have the place nearly to yourself. The soft golden light on the marble, the quiet lapping of the waves, and the panoramic view of Naxos waking up—it’s an unforgettable way to start the day, and a photographer’s dream.
7. Sunrise in Oia and Swimming at Amoudi Bay, Santorini
Oia gets a lot of attention for its sunsets… and for good reason. Watching the sky shift over whitewashed domes and blue church roofs is one of those moments that feels almost unreal. But beyond the crowds and the camera flashes, there’s another side to Oia worth discovering.

Wake up early and wander the narrow pathways before the shops open and the cruises dock. You’ll see locals sweeping doorsteps, cats stretching in the sun, and a quieter rhythm that’s easy to miss.
Follow the stone steps down from Oia and you’ll find yourself at Amoudi Bay, a tiny fishing harbour that feels like a world away from the village above. Here, the pace slows down. The water is unbelievably clear, and the cliffs are made for jumping (if you’re into that). Even though it’s not exactly a secret, it somehow still feels like one.

After a swim, grab a table at one of the tavernas right on the water’s edge. There’s no need to rush, no schedule to keep, just a long, lazy lunch and maybe another swim if the mood strikes.
8. Hike Samaria Gorge, Crete
This is one of the longest gorge hikes in Europe and absolutely worth the effort. Expect a full-day adventure: steep rock walls that rise dramatically on either side, wild kri-kri goats darting across ledges, and crystal-clear rivers underfoot. It’s rugged and different from the rest of Greece in the best possible way.
The hike ends in a sleepy little village on the Libyan Sea, where cold drinks and your first bite of lunch feel like the best meal you’ve ever had. There’s even a ferry waiting to take you back up the coast. Samaria is the kind of hike that leaves you tired, dusty, and totally alive.

9. Discover Crete’s Secret Beach
Okay, we’re not going to drop a pin here—but somewhere between Preveli and Plakias is a quiet stretch of coastline with no signs, no sunbeds, and no crowds. We found it after bumping down a dirt road, parking on a random pull-off, and following a goat path through the scrub. When we arrived, there were just a few others there.

It felt like a place untouched by tourism, just turquoise water, coarse sand, and the occasional sea breeze. Talk to locals, rent a car, and go wander. Sometimes the best places aren’t in guidebooks. They’re around the next curve in the road.
10. Explore the Mountain Villages of Naxos
The true magic of Naxos lies in its mountain villages. Places where the pace is slow, the food is homemade, and the streets are shared with friendly locals and even friendlier cats. Villages like Chalkio and Filoti are a little livelier, offering charming cafés, artisan shops, and cobbled laneways shaded by bougainvillea. Others, like Apeiranthos and Koronos, are quieter and more remote.

Each village has its own personality, but they all feel authentic and untouched by mass tourism. Spend a day hopping between them, sipping coffee in a sleepy square, chatting with shopkeepers, sampling local cheeses, or stumbling upon a tucked-away taverna that feels like someone’s home kitchen. Whether you’re in it for the history, the architecture, or just the joy of exploring without a plan, the villages of Naxos are not to be missed.
