Golden may be small in size, but it packs a big punch when it comes to winter adventure. With just over 4,000 residents, this lively mountain town in the Canadian Rockies is surrounded by dramatic peaks, powerful rivers, and endless opportunities to get outside.
From exhilarating ski terrain and peaceful Nordic trails to memorable meals shared around town, Golden offers tons of adventure without sacrificing its local, down-to-earth charm. It’s a place where days are spent outside and evenings are unhurried, making it easy to settle in and feel part of the community. Even if you’re only there for a weekend.
Here’s how we spent a winter weekend in Golden and why it’s a trip we’d happily do again!
Friday Evening: Arrival & Dinner
Dinner at Whitetooth Mountain Bistro
We arrived in Golden on Friday evening and headed straight to Whitetooth Mountain Bistro, a local favourite and the perfect introduction to the town. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, exactly what you want after a winter drive through the mountains.
The food here was incredible, and the staff were all warm and welcoming. They change the menu every few months, meaning there is always something new to try, plus they have great options to accommodate all dietary restrictions!
We highly recommend the Short Rib and Striploin!
Check into Copper Horse Lodge
After dinner, we drove up to Copper Horse Lodge, our home for the weekend at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. This spot is a dream base for outdoor lovers, just steps from the gondola, yet somehow feels secluded and quiet. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, with cozy touches that make you feel right at home.
Whether you’re clicking into skis first thing in the morning or riding the gondola up for a mountain-top dinner, staying on-resort makes everything feel easy. Copper Horse Lodge offers all the little comforts that make a big difference. An outdoor sauna, easy online check-in, high-speed internet, a gear-drying room, a cozy fireplace and seating area, and a self-serve breakfast to start the day right.
They’ve also just opened a new on-site restaurant called The Jeffrey Room. The menu looks fantastic, and it’s definitely on our list for the next winter trip to Golden!
GOOD TO KNOW: If you’re staying in town or want to get to town, the Golden Kicking Horse Connector Shuttle runs daily between Golden and the resort. It’s a great option for visitors, and later this year (2026), an app will launch, allowing riders to track the shuttle in real time and pre-purchase vouchers online!

Saturday: Ski Day & A Unique Dining Experience
On Saturday morning, we grabbed a bite to eat at Copper Horse Lodge, and we were really impressed with the selection. This complimentary breakfast includes a self-serve area with coffee, tea, juice, sparkling water, egg bites, bagels, bread, cereal, yogurt, fruit, banana bread, and more!
Skiing at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort
Next, we walked over to the Day Lodge to pick up our lift tickets and headed straight up the gondola at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The ride is part of the experience, climbing quickly above the tree line and opening up to sweeping views of five national parks and several mountain ranges.
Kicking Horse is well known as the Champagne Powder Capital of Canada and for its 4,300 feet of vertical. If you’re an experienced skier, you will love the selection of black and double-black-diamond runs. That said, there are some great options for beginners and intermediate skiers, too. From wide groomers to scenic runs and plenty of places to stop and soak in the views, it’s a mountain that welcomes a wide range of abilities.
Since I (Cayleigh) was seven months pregnant when we visited, I decided not to ski, but I still got to experience the mountain. I rode the gondola up, took in the unreal views from the top, and then met David back at the bottom. We loved the fact that even if you’re not skiing, you can still enjoy a lot of what Kicking Horse has to offer.
Nordic Skiing at Dawn Mountain
In the afternoon, we slowed things down with a visit to Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre, Golden’s main cross-country ski area. Located right near the base of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, this trail network offers a completely different perspective of the landscape. Quiet, forested, and incredibly peaceful.
With rentals available from 10 AM to 4 PM and over 33 kilometres of well-groomed trails, it’s a fun, accessible experience even if Nordic skiing isn’t something you do often. After our ski, we relaxed in the sauna at Copper Horse Lodge before dinner.
Dinner at Eagle’s Eye Restaurant
On Saturday night, we had dinner at Eagle’s Eye Restaurant, the highest-elevation restaurant in Canada! This experience begins with a gondola ride up the mountain, which feels especially magical as the sun sets and the valley lights up below.
The interior is gorgeous, the food is to die for, and the views from the massive windows are out of this world. We ordered the Classic Mussels, Alberta Bison Tenderloin and Chicken Supreme, all of which were delicious.
Sunday: Snowmobile Adventures & The Golden Stroll
Breakfast at Ethos Café
On Sunday morning, we packed up and drove into town for breakfast at Ethos Café. This beloved local spot focused on community, quality ingredients, and thoughtful food to fuel every adventure. Try the Beet & Juniper Lox Bagel, the Breaky Roll, or the Poached Pear Granola Bowl… you can thank us later!
Ethos isn’t just about fantastic food; it’s a gathering place. Over breakfast, we witnessed locals and visitors chatting and laughing as they shared stories and recommendations. This sense of community is part of what makes Golden so special, and it’s the perfect way to kick off an action-packed day.
Snowmobiling with Golden Snowmobile Rentals
Next up was a guided backcountry tour with Golden Snowmobile Rentals, which gave us access to incredible mountain scenery without any prior snowmobiling experience! We met at their office in town to get geared up, then followed our guide about 30 minutes out of Golden to the trailhead.
From the start, our guide was super helpful and let us go at our own pace, making sure we felt comfortable and confident the whole way. The ride took us roughly 14 kilometres into the backcountry, winding through snowy forests and opening up into wide alpine views.
We stopped at a cozy backcountry hut, complete with a fireplace and enjoyed the fantastic lunch provided. Afterwards, we explored a scenic valley and even had the option to try some off-trail riding.
Our guide was knowledgeable and patient throughout the day, always checking in and stopping to point out viewpoints along the way. Spending the day deep in the mountains like this gave us a whole new appreciation for the winter landscape of Golden and showed us just how accessible backcountry adventure can be here.
The Golden Stroll, Bridges & River Walks
After we got back to town, we spent some time exploring Golden before heading home. Walking across the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge, Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame bridge, is always a highlight. It’s also where the new interactive experience, the Golden Stroll, begins.
The Golden Stroll is a self-guided walking tour with two loop options, ranging from about 1.5 to 3 hours. Along the way, you can scan QR codes to watch short videos that bring the town’s history to life, from its railway beginnings to the people and cultures that shaped the community. It’s an easy, engaging way to connect with Golden during the winter while enjoying a relaxed walk.
