WINTER in Calgary can be cold, snowy, dark and even downright depressing. If you`re like us and tired of feeling cooped up this winter, here are 11 exciting activities to get you up and out of the house!
Skating
Winter activities in Calgary require WARM clothes and skating is no exception. The good news? Calgary has some of the nicest outdoor skating rinks I have ever skated on. You’ve got Bowness Park, Olympic Plaza, and Prince’s Island Lagoon along with dozens of other local community rinks to choose from. Hit The Mountains
The mountains aren’t just a beautiful summer destination. Grab your snowshoes, skates, ice fishing gear, and some warm clothes and hit the road! Kananaskis Country, Canmore, and Banff National Park are all relatively close and offer beautiful scenery while enjoying your favourite activities.

Decorate A Cake
First of all, yes, the cakes are as delicious as they look. Second, they are a blast to decorate! Available in vanilla, chocolate, or the monthly special you can decorate them with buttercream icing, sprinkles, fondant and a few other embellishments.

Color Me Mine is a small pottery painting franchise that has multiple locations in Calgary. It’s a fun family activity that lets you get creative! They have hundreds of different pieces to choose from and they will help you create your masterpiece. Once you’re finished, the staff will bake and glaze your piece for you!

Relax at The Kananaskis Nordic Spa
Kananaskis Nordic Spa has become a go-to “alpine sanctuary” of the Canadian Rockies and there is no question why! Zoo Lights have been a popular winter activity in Calgary for many years now and it’s a great way to get out of the house and spend time with family and friends. The Lions Festival of Lights is another beautiful evening walk located in Confederation Park.


Beer Tasting
There are currently over 35 craft breweries in Calgary and most of them have been hit hard by this pandemic. Can you think of a better winter activity than getting out, tasting some delicious brews AND supporting a local business? I sure can’t. Don’t forget to plan a safe ride home before heading out.


Explore a New Trail
Calgary has dozens of amazing parks to explore including Fish Creek, Bowness, Glenmore, and Nose Hill. They all boast many kilometres of trails that are great for walking, running, biking, cross-country skiing, or just hanging out and enjoying the view.
Photography
Without a doubt, one of our favourite winter activities is taking photos. From the beautiful prairie sunsets to the white mountain peaks and the Bow River, Calgary has some undoubtedly beautiful landscapes. On top of that, there are also a ton of great opportunities to capture portraits, city life, and even astronomy.


Try A New Local Restaurant
Local restaurants have been hit extremely hard during this pandemic. Now more than ever, it is crucial to support these small businesses. Cayleigh and I are BIG food people. It’s so much fun to experiment with new food in our home city. Whether it’s delivery, takeout, or dine-in, step out of your comfort zone and try something new!


Tobogganing or Sledding
Calgary has some insane tobogganing hills that are perfect for both kids and adults. There are literally dozens to choose from that are spread out all over the city so picking one close to home will be easy. Prairie Winds Park, Kingsland Dry Pond, and Royal Oak are just a few of our favourites. Grab the crazy carpet and head out for a day of fun!
