The Location

Only accessible by boat; La Fortuna is located 10 minutes from Panajachel. Panajachel is the main hub between Lake Atitlan and the rest of Guatemala. The ferries run every 20 minutes and cost about a dollar per person allowing efficient access to this boutique hotel. From here you have breathtaking views of the lake and the San Pedro Volcano as well as a great home base to explore the rest of the towns surrounding Lake Atitlan.

The Property

The property is made up of the 5 bungalows and a reception area along with a private dock, day huts overlooking the lake and sun chairs. La Fortuna runs on solar power and they also have a herb garden and a large compost. We especially loved the fact that the entire eco hotel was designed and built using local materials! The hot tub (which is heated using a wood stove) is ready by 4 pm daily so you can enjoy the sunset views before dinner.

Once it gets dark; don’t miss the opportunity to admire the stars. The staff have blankets you can borrow in the lobby; so snuggle up on the dock and watch the entire sky light up! Depending on your room you can also enjoy the stars from your deck or your private bathtub.

The Rooms

La Fortuna at Atitlan offers a beautiful and unique room for every budget. The petite bungalows are cozy and inviting with an outdoor living area and open aired bathroom. Suites 1 and 2 are more spacious and private offering a loft area and a king sized bed. The deluxe suite is the largest of the Balinese style bungalows which even boasts a private pool and sun deck. The Food

The chefs at La Fortuna serve delicious meals daily using locally grown ingredients. They grow some produce and herbs on-site while supplementing the rest from neighbouring towns around the lake. Breakfast is ordered the evening before and delivered to your bungalow at the time of your choice. The food is always fantastic and lets face it.. nothing says romantic getaway like breakfast in bed! If you choose to stick around for the day you can order from a snack menu and enjoy the full bar. Each evening you can choose between the 2-3 delicious dinner options of the day.

Onsite Activities & The Surrounding Towns

There are 11 towns surrounding Lake Atitlan that are each unique in their own way. The staff at La Fortuna was extremely helpful in going over all the options based on what we were interested in doing. Activities range from cliff jumping to a chocolate factory tour and everything in between. On the property you will find free kayaks and paddle boards as well as a short hike up to a beautiful viewpoint.
