Zermatt, located on Switzerland’s south border, is a resort town famous for skiing, hiking, and climbing. Most known for its iconic peak, the Matterhorn, Zermatt is an outdoor mecca built for adventure lovers. In this blog post, I am going to share our very favourite place to stay in the area and why you need to add it to your itinerary!
During our honeymoon this fall, David and I had the privilege of staying at the Designhotel Matterhorn FOCUS in Zermatt. Combining divine luxury, excellent customer service, and superb views, this stunning hotel exceeded all of our expectations and provided an astounding stay.
Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS is one of the most extraordinary hotels we have stayed at not only in Switzerland but anywhere in the world!
From the moment we were picked up at the train station, we were welcomed by the entire staff like family. Each one of them was exceptionally kind, accommodating, and helpful. From sitting down with us to go over restaurant recommendations to opening the spa up early when we expressed interest, they always went out of their way to make our stay more enjoyable.
After 10 days of hiking and camping, we soaked up every little bit of luxury the Matterhorn FOCUS Hotel had to offer. From the awe-inspiring rooms—seriously… wait until you see the rooms!— to the serene spa area featuring an indoor pool and outdoor jacuzzi, this marvellous property did not disappoint.
Our experienced, valued staff embody and shape the philosophy of honest hospitality. You can always be sure of personal and attentive service. Warmth and style mean a lot to us, so you will feel well looked after as a guest at the Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS. Day in day out we are committed to your well-being.– Christian Noti (Owner) and Patrizia Gasser (Management)
The streets of Zermatt are always humming with people. There are hotels, restaurants and shops everywhere you turn. Because of this, the quieter location of Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS was a huge draw for us.
Situated at the base of the “Matterhorn Glacier Paradise” gondola station, we were only a few minutes’ walk from the hustle and bustle while getting to enjoy the stilled serenity of the south end of town.
Another massive advantage of staying here, you might guess by the name, “Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS”.
In the centre of Zermatt, people will crowd around a select few viewpoints to catch a glimpse of this monumental peak. At this wonderful property, however, you get Matterhorn views around every corner! From the outdoor terrace to the balconies, it is absolutely surreal to enjoy your morning coffee or evening glass of wine in the presence of such an iconic mountain.
The Designhotel Matterhorn FOCUS has a total of 30 rooms spread across 3 buildings, each with distinctive architecture. From stylish double and family rooms to enormous suites, there is something for every desire and budget.
Amenities include a spa, indoor/outdoor pool, lounge with food and beverages, fireplace, and terrace with Matterhorn views. When we arrived, we were greeted with a welcome drink and afternoon tea by the fireplace.
Each afternoon, guests are treated to “afternoon tea” which includes tasty finger sandwiches, sweets, coffee, water, and tea.
If you have a clear evening, I cannot recommend the terrace enough! Grab your beverage of choice, a blanket, and your loved ones, and snuggle up to watch the sunset over the Matterhorn. It is incredibly beautiful and the perfect way to end your day.
Without any further ado, my friends, let’s talk about the rooms! Before we arrived, we swooned over the photos. We did not know exactly which one we would be staying in, but we knew it would be good.
As we were led into the doorway of the Royal Suite, both of our jaws hit the floor. It is one of the most exquisite places we have ever stayed, by a long shot!
What do you get when you combine floor-to-ceiling windows, an extravagant soaker tub, and a stylish living area with Matterhorn views, a sizeable balcony, and a plush, cozy bed? Absolute heaven.
Even with all of those huge features, Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS hasn’t forgotten about the small details. They offer luxurious soaps, lotions, and scrubs for the bath and the room is stocked with fresh fruit, a coffee bar, elegant robes, and velvety blankets.
With us, each room is different and characterized by its distinctive architecture. Rooms with high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and the unusual room layout give the rooms and suites the unmistakable touch of the Matterhorn FOCUS. In these rooms, flooded with light, you instantly feel relaxed and free.– Hotel Matterhorn Focus
Ah, the spa. This is something we don’t see all the time in Canada but are so pleased by its popularity in Switzerland. Although many hotels offer spa facilities in this wonderful country, Hotel Matterhorn FOCUS is a step above the rest.
We spent a great deal of time enjoying the indoor pool and outdoor jacuzzi. Connected through a passage in the picturesque wall of windows, you can soak up mountain views from either area.
Adjacent to the indoor pool, there is a quiet area with heated loungers, perfect for winding down after a day of hiking.
On top of that, each guest can enjoy the Finnish sauna, caldarium, sole bath and relaxation room. They also offer a variety of relaxing massages and vitalizing body treatments that can be booked through the front desk.
Included with each stay is a delectable buffet each morning in the breakfast room. Served from 7-10 AM, this heavenly spread is a remarkable way to start your day. When we visited, the menu consisted of a wide variety of eggs, cheese, meat, baking, fruit, cereal, sweets, are more! Paired, of course, with coffee, tea, juice, and water.
Throughout the day and evening, they serve a select few dishes like pizza, soups, and salads. These are available to be eaten in the lounge or ordered to your room. Let’s not forget about the scrumptious afternoon tea, either! You do not want to miss it each afternoon in the lobby from 3-6 PM.
